A Sunday morning collision on Highway 36, near the hamlet of Scandia, claimed the life of an 18-year-old woman.

According to RCMP, shortly before noon, the female driver was attempting to cross the Veterans Memorial Highway on Range Road 155, when her vehicle was struck by a northbound pickup truck. The collision sent the woman’s vehicle into the path of an oncoming southbound pickup truck.

Brooks RCMP, EMS, and members of the Brooks and Scandia Fire Departments, responded to the intersection. The woman, an 18-year-old from Rolling Hills, Alberta, died at the scene.

The identity of the deceased has not been released as RCMP members have not notified the woman’s family.

As a result of the crash, the northbound pickup truck overturned. The driver was transported by ambulance to the Brooks Health Centre for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver and passenger of the southbound pickup truck suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Highway 36 traffic was detoured for several hours.

RCMP continue to investigate.
