It was an emotional day in court during the sentencing hearing for a man who slashed his baby son.

Both the father, and the mother, of the baby boy sobbed as prosecutors played the 911 tape from the day of the stabbing.

In August, police were called to a Cranston home and found an 11-month-old baby with stab wounds. He had been slashed several times with a kitchen knife. The baby boy survived the ordeal but will have the scars for the rest of his life.

The baby's father cannot be named to protect the child's identity.

He was originally charged with attempted murder but pled guilty to aggravated assault. He was allowed to plea to the lesser charge after a psychiatric assessment found he was under extreme stress at the time.

On the 911 tape, the baby can be heard crying weakly and the father is heard apologizing to his son and saying, "My baby is hurt and I need to get shot."

The mother of the baby read her impact statement in court on Friday. She said "One day he will ask me about his scars. I do not know how I will explain it.'

The Crown is asking for a seven-year prison sentence; the defence is asking for two years.
