The Calgary Board of Education plans to build a new school in Varsity Acres, but at least one neighbour isn’t happy with the idea.
The CBE wants to build the school on vacant CBE-owned land west of 50 Street and north of Varna Crescent N.W. The new junior/senior high school is for students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities/delays and who have complex learning, medical, and emotional needs.
Currently those students go to Christine Meikle School at 64 12 St. N.E., but the CBC says it isn’t a suitable building for students with complex needs.
However, one resident in the Varsity Acres neighbourhood says she is worried about the traffic problems the new school will inevitably cause. Barbara Jenkins says parking and traffic congestion are already issues and the school will likely make it much worse.
Jenkins says the residents weren’t consulted about the project and she would like to learn more from the CBE.
The CBE says it will work with the community association and the residents. It says the location is desirable because it’s close the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
