Alternative music fans hoping to catch some of their favourite artists during a weekend music festival at Fort Calgary are out of luck as organizers have pulled the plug on Saturday’s and Sunday’s scheduled performances.

The announcement was made on the X-Fest Facebook Page on Saturday at approximately 1:00 p.m., roughly two hours after the gates were scheduled to open:

In the interest of public safety, and due to adverse weather conditions, we regretfully announce the cancellation of the 2015 edition of X-Fest Calgary.

Heavy rain over the last 24 hours has created an unsafe environment to proceed with the festival.

All ticket holders for X-Fest Calgary will be able to redeem their tickets in Edmonton at The Official SONiC BOOM Page festival www.sonicboomfestival.com (which features the same artist line up: Hozier, Tenacious D, Ellie Goulding, Alexisonfire & many more this weekend).

Alternatively, refunds will be available at point of purchase.

According to concert promoter Union Events, 'Heavy rain over the last 24 hours has created an unsafe environment to proceed with the festival'.

Music fans attempted were disheartened to hear the show would not go on.

“It makes sense, electrical stuff outside,” said disappointed ticket holder Dave Bickert. ‘It just sucks. We were prepared (for the weather), they should be prepared to.”

“It’s sad. We have to go back to the hotel room now,” said Travis Ficher who drove from Enderby, B.C. “We came here a fair ways, took time off work.”

The disappointment was not restricted to those who planned to stand in front of the X-Fest stage

The frontman for The Flaming Lips says news of the festival cancellation was tough to swallow.

“You don’t really accept it at first,” said Wayne Coyne. “When things are weather related things can change.”

The Oklahoma based band has played countless festivals throughout their 30+ years together and Coyne says he understands the decision.

“I trust the organizers of the festival are keeping in mind the safety of the people that we’re there to entertain. If they told us to play, we would play.”

Fans of The Flaming Lips can take solace in the fact the band will attempt to bring their music back to Calgary.

“We’d love to be able to come back and do something. We’ve been around for a long, long time and we’ve played all kinds of great makeup shows,” said Coyne.

“Let’s see if we can do something cool out of this.”
