Residents of several southwest communities are mopping up after an afternoon thunderstorm released more precipitation than the drainage system could accept.

Intersections in the neighbourhoods of Braeside, Palliser/Pump Hill, Cedarbrae, Canyon Meadows, Oakridge, Woodlands and Woodbine were submerged with several reports of stuck vehicles.

As of 5:15 p.m., flooded intersections include:

  • Braeside Drive and Southland Drive S.W.
  • Braeside Drive/Oakfield Drive and 24 Street S.W.
  • Southland Drive and 24 Street S.W.
  • Woodview Drive and 24 Street S.W.

By 7:00 p.m., the water levels had subsided in all areas.

In addition to flooding, members of the Calgary Fire Department responded to two afternoon house fires reportedly sparked by lightning strikes.

Crews were called to a home on Stranraer Place S.W., in Strathcona, shortly before 4:00 p.m.after a gas line was damaged. ATCO responded to the scene to repair the line.

A separate fire was reported on Beny-Sur-Mer Road S.W. in Currie Barracks. Firefighter encountered flames venting through the roof and quickly extinguished the blaze.

In addition to the two house fires, the CFD responded to several reports of homes and trees being struck by lightning.
