The Alberta Agriculture department says that two cases of anthrax have been found on two beef farms in the northern part of the province.

The farms are located in the Fort Vermillion area, and officials are urging other farmers to examine their herds for any other traces of the disease.

Saskatchewan authorities say they’ve also found cases of the disease on farms in that province too.

Anthrax is a contagious and infectious soil-borne disease caused by spore-forming bacteria that can infect mammals, in particular grazing herds.

Cases are common in Alberta among grazing animals in the summer, usually after periods of hot weather.
