With all sorts of April Fool's gags popping up everywhere on Sunday, even a few of the leaders in Alberta's election joined in the fun.

Wildrose leader Danielle Smith handed out a news release stating that if she were elected, she would merge Alberta with Saskatchewan and create a new province called "Saskberta".

The faux release states the capital city of "Saskberta" would be Lloydminster, which would be renamed Regimonton. And, bringing a third NHL team to the region would be a top priority.

"The first priority of a Wildrose government will be to secure a third NHL team which represents both provinces -- I think the ‘Saskberta Grain Elevators' would be a great name," Smith says.

The release ends with: "Wildrose stands for cuddling small animals, drawing pictures with children, loving cake, and provocative public transport."

Alberta party leader Glenn Taylor said he would propose a high-speed gondola to connect Calgary and Edmonton whereas the NDP issued a news release claiming they were releasing an attack ad, but a YouTube link sent viewers to a joke video.
