An Alberta man is dead and his wife is in hospital in Montana after their plane crashed on Thursday afternoon, U.S. authorities have confirmed.

According to John Lopp, the Meagher County Sheriff, a small plane, a Saratoga Piper, crashed in the Big Belt Mountains in Montana at approximately 1:00 p.m.

The pilot, David Charron, was declared dead at the scene. His wife, Valerie Charron, was transported to Saint Peters Hospital in Helena via helicopter. Authorities say Valerie, who suffered severe injuries in the crash, called 911 herself to guide rescue crews to the scene.

David was an experienced pilot who owned a small plane which he flew out of the Springbank Airport.

The Charrons were travelling to Helena, Montana when the crash occurred. The final destination for their trip was Phoenix, Arizona.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
