The province is planning on changing the design of Alberta’s licence plates and is collecting feedback on three possible designs.

Premier Dave Hancock was in Calgary on Tuesday along with a number of other dignitaries to unveil the new designs, which will also include features to help make roads safer.

Albertans can vote on one of three designs in an online survey that will run from July 8 to August 19 and the one that receives the most votes will be picked for the new plate.

“Alberta is the best place to live, work and raise a family; and, these three designs are all inspired by the pride Albertans have in their home. The natural beauty of our province is on display in all three designs. I know Albertans will enjoy having a say on what their new provincial licence plate will look like,” said Premier, Dave Hancock.

“Our current licence plate is more than 30 years old and lacks features to help make our roads and communities safer. This new plate will make it easier for police to spot vehicles that are unregistered, uninsured, or stolen,” said Doug Griffiths, Minister of Service Alberta.

The new licence plate will be ready to mount on vehicles by the spring of 2015 and the province says the change will bring Alberta in line with other jurisdictions across North America.

The new plate will include:

  • Alberta’s new logo
  • The Alberta Government’s website address alberta.ca
  • A reflective coating that makes the plate easier to see under low light conditions and easier for infrared equipment to read

Annual vehicle registration will increase by $5 to help cover the cost of production and implementation of the new plate.
