A public state memorial will be held on Friday in Calgary for former federal cabinet minister and Alberta Premier Jim Prentice.

Prentice, Jim Kruk, Ken Gellatly and Sheldon Reid, were all killed in a plane crash near Kelowna on October 13, 2016.

Prentice was sworn in as Alberta’s 16th premier on September 15, 2014 and he served until May 24, 2015.

He was born in South Porcupine, Ontario and moved with his family to Alberta when he was 13.

In 2004, Prentice became a Member of Parliament for Calgary North Centre and he was re-elected in 2006 and 2008.

He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1992 and was presented with the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005. Prentice was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

Prentice leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Karen, three daughters and two grandchildren.

The service for Jim Prentice begins at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium and tickets for the public will be handed out at the north entrance starting at 9:45.
