A wildlife hospital was damaged in the two hail storms that hit earlier this month and a campaign is underway to help raise money for repairs and to keep the facility running.
The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation in Madden looks after all kinds of injured animals.
A major hail storm on August 6th punched holes in the roof where the great horned owls stay and damaged many of the facility's buildings and wildlife enclosures.
A second storm hit the area and the centre was soon inundated with even more animals.
“The majority had to be euthanized due to their injuries. They had very bad fractures, open fractures, some of them were losing eyes, just really bad injuries that no matter what we did we couldn't have rehabilitated them to be released back into the wild,” said Holly Duvall, wildlife rehabilitation technician.
Insurance will cover some of the damage but the facility is a registered charity so it doesn't qualify for government funding.
The facility relies on support from local individuals and businesses and says 95 percent of donations go directly to caring for injured and orphaned animals.
