Residents in northeast Calgary had nearly gotten themselves dug out of a huge snowfall last week, but another snow storm has turned things upside down.

Many residents in several northeast communities were completely snowed on last week after a huge snow storm came in, coupled with brisk winds that ended up piling the snow into drifts nearly eight feet high.

The City of Calgary says they'll be lending a hand to the stranded drivers, sending out tow trucks to the hard-hit communities of Taradale, Skyview Ranch, and Saddleridge.

Those trucks will be working to pull vehicles out of the deep snow so plows will be able to clear the side streets that have sat untouched for a week.

Residents in the communities say the plan by the city is a great idea. "It's a very good idea. Sooner the better. We are getting more snow here, I don't want to get stuck inside without going to work."

During last week’s storm the drifts in those neighbourhoods were so high that it swallowed some vehicles whole.

Some residents had to shovel out their whole yards and driveways, but had absolutely nowhere to put the snow.

Main roads in the neighbourhoods have been cleared and crews are working on clearing the secondary streets.

The City of Calgary also says the heavy snow in back lanes is preventing garbage and recycling vehicles from collecting in many northeast communities.

Officials are asking the residents of the following communities to move their carts to the front curb for collection on Tuesday:

  • Castleridge
  • Martha’s Haven (Martindale)
  • Redstone
  • Saddleridge and Saddlelake
  • Skyview Ranch
  • Taradale and Taralake

Carts should be there for 7 a.m. and any residents who are unable to move their carts are asked to leave them for next week.

Regular back lane service will resume once the lanes become passable.
