The exterior walls and the attic of a detached garage suffered significant damage following a Saturday morning fire in the city’s northeast.

At approximately 2:00 a.m. Saturday, fire crews responded to a home in the 2700 block of 48 St. N.E. after a passerby alerted the homeowners to the fact their garage was on fire.

Residents were evacuated from a neighbouring home as a precautionary measure after the fence between the two houses ignited.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze before the fire spread to a classic car, a 1967 Ford Fairlane, parked inside the garage.

No one was injured in the fire.

Officials with the Calgary Fire Department and Calgary Police Service believe the fire originated outside of the structure, possibly in a garbage can.

Fires were started in at least two other trash cans in the neighbourhood Saturday morning.

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact the Calgary Police Service, 403-266-1234.
