A summer getaway is something everyone needs from time to time, but you also need to be careful and make sure you don’t leave any telltale signs you’re away.

Closed curtains, dark rooms, and piled-up newspapers are all easy to spot signs for potential thieves looking for an easy target, says the Better Business Bureau.

The BBB is reminding homeowners to be mindful of security before they leave on vacation.

"Between booking flights and hotels and packing your belongings, it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of a vacation," says Sandra Crozier-McKee, president and CEO of BBB Serving Southern Alberta and East Kootenay in a release. "But it's crucial to think about not only what you're taking with you but also what you're leaving behind."

According to the Calgary Police, there have been more than 3,000 residential break and enters in 2014 so far.

The BBB is recommending the following tips to keep your home and belongings safe:

  • Keep your plans quiet – using social media to announce travel plans is an easy way for strangers to pick up on when you’re away from home.
  • Keep up appearances – consider leaving your blinds open and arrange to have your yard maintained if you’re away for a long period of time. Also consider getting a timer for your lights.
  • Leave unneeded personal info at home – if you don’t need a cheque book or address book, leave them at home in a secure location.
  • Stop your mail and newspapers while you’re away – an overflowing mailbox can be a tempting sign for someone looking to break in or steal your personal information.
  • Leave your computer at home – if you must bring your computer with you, make sure your security software is up to date and avoid using public Wi-Fi hotspots that aren’t secured.
