High winds and heavy rains may be localized to Edmonton and area, but it’s also having an effect on the Calgary International Airport.

A number of flights have been cancelled at Edmonton International Airport or just diverted.

Strong cross winds and driving rain has made it very difficult for pilots to make safe landings; so many flights have been instructed to land in Calgary instead.

The rainy weather is also chiefly responsible for a unique issue. Earthworms have been making their way out onto the runways at EIA.

Worms aren’t the major concern, but the birds that come to feed on the worms on pavement are.

Officials claim the worms aren’t attracting many more birds and crews will eventually be sent out to clear the rest of them from the runways later on.

Nevertheless, many airlines have issued travel advisories due to the inclement weather in Edmonton and that’s force many to change their plans.

Taylor Woods, who is getting married in Jasper, say the diversion was just another bit of stress leading up to the big day.

“It wasn’t too bad, the flight and everything was fine. It’s a little bit stressful to find out the flight’s been cancelled. We managed to keep our calm and get our rental car switched over pretty easily.”

Many roads in Edmonton have been flooded due to heavy rain and many trees have been downed as a result.

About seven flights departing and arriving in Calgary have been cancelled as a result of the weather.
