Parks Canada officials say a grizzly bear has been spotted in and around the Banff townsite recently and are advising residents and visitors to be cautious.

The bear has been seen in a number of yards, streets and alleys looking for food and has come in close proximity to people several times.

The warning was issued on Thursday and officials say surprise encounters could result in defensive behaviour by the bear.

Parks officials say the bear, known as female #148, generally responds well to relocation and that they will be working in teams of two around the clock to monitor her activities.

They will use adverse conditioning to move her away from populated areas to ensure she does not become further habituated to people.

They are advising people to take care and to be prepared when travelling outdoors in the area just in case.

Bear safe practices include:

•Securing all wildlife attractants.
•Paying attention for bears when travelling in this area.
•Making noise when hiking and cycling.
•Keeping all pets on leash and a close eye on children.
•Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it.
•Maintain a safe distance between you and any bear.
•Reporting all bear sightings immediately to the Visitor Centre or Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470

Residents are also being told to refrain from placing pumpkins, candy, and other food sources outdoors and to display pumpkins inside a window instead.
