Fire crews with the Rocky View County Fire Department battled a late morning grass fire north of the Bearspaw Country Club which crawled within metres of a Bearspaw residence.

According to Rocky View Fire Chief Dax Huba, firefighters from Springbank and Cochrane responded to the 200 block of Wood Lands Drive shortly after 10:00 a.m.  Crews encountered homeowners armed with garden hoses attempting to prevent the fire from reaching their property.

Firefighters successfully extinguished the grass fire before it could spread to any structures.

Fire Chief Huba says a stronger wind could have escalated the fire despite the wet ground in the area.

Patches of grass in Calgary and areas surrounding the city remain extremely dry and the decayed grass is susceptible to fire.
