Calgary fire crews are reminding residents to stay away from icy waterways after two young boys fell through the ice on a pond in West Dover.

The boys were playing on the frozen pond went the ice gave away, plunging them into the icy water.

Luckily, a passerby noticed them and managed to rescue them with some rope, and then call 911.

Crews say that even though ponds are still frozen, it can be deceiving.

“The ice this time of year is very thin, very brittle, even if it looks thick, it probably won’t support your weight. So we want to advise people if they’re out with their pets not to venture out on the ice, keep their dogs off the ice and hopefully we can get through the springtime without any tragedies,” says Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux.

Emergency officials checked out the boys and other than being cold and shivering, they were okay.
