Nicolino Camardi, the man who was convicted of torturing a dog and cat to death in January 2014, will spend 22 months in jail for his part in the grisly crime.

In January 2014, a dog and a cat were found dead in a southeast alley, their mouths taped shut.

Veterinarians found the dog starved to death while the cat suffocated.

Camardi, 19, pleaded guilty to the crime back in December 2014 to causing unnecessary pain to the animals.

Earlier this week, Camardi addressed the court, saying that he knows he can change his ways.

“I understand what I did was horrible,” he said. “If I change the people I hang out with, stay sober, I can be a good person.”

The young man’s guilty plea, the judge says, was an indication of his remorse and played into the consideration of the sentence.

The Crown had requested two and a half to three years, while Camardi’s defence was asking for leniency.

They wanted a 12 to 18 month sentence, saying he had a troubled past and was struggling with drug use.

The judge decided on 22 months, which the Crown says was higher than the maximum allowed for the same offence in 2008.

With the time Camardi has already served in jail, he has six months left in custody.

The Calgary Humane Society says they hope the sentence will resonate in the community.

“This is someone that we’re glad to have been able to charge and prosecute,” said Brad Nichols, with the Calgary Humane Society. “Hopefully, it’s enough oversight to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Camardi is also prohibited from owning animals for the rest of his life and not allowed to live in a home with animals.
