The operator of a local renovation company is facing charges after a homeowner discovered a camera and recording device hidden in an electrical socket in the bathroom.

Police say the operator of The Good Shepard Group allegedly installed the equipment during a contracted job.

Investigators believe the device was installed sometime between August 1 and November 14, 2014, when the accused was doing renovations at the Coventry home.

The homeowner found the recording equipment and immediately called police who confirmed it contained compromising images of the two female residents.

“Understandably they were shocked, they were very embarrassed. They were reluctant at first to come forward to the Calgary police because they knew they were going to have to disclose this media with images of them naked in the privacy of their home,” said Constable Neil Macpherson of the Centralized General Investigations Section.

Ting Kay Chu, 43, of Calgary, also known as Tohmus Tikay Chu, is charged with two counts of voyeurism and two counts of failing to comply with a court order.

“As part of the investigation, we have seized computer devices from Mr. Chu and the technological crimes team of the Calgary Police Service are examining these devices,” said Macpherson.  “It appears to be motion activated, it’s a device that if you were looking for it, is readily available to the public at specialized stores.”

Investigators say it appeared that every time Chu went to the home he told the homeowners that more work was required and that he returned to the house about 30 times.

Police say Chu does not hold a valid business licence.

They are asking anyone who may have work in progress, or anyone who has concerns about work completed by Chu or his company, to contact them.
