It’s nothing new heading into the driving season, but some Calgary residents may be rethinking their travel plans as the price of gas is up and shows no sign of getting cheaper anytime soon.

Prices at the pumps went up again for the third time in a row, putting the average cost at $1.289 a litre.

The national average is a $1.37, with the highest prices posted in Montreal where gas is a whopping $1.53.

Gas has never been this expensive this early in the year in Canada.

Experts say there are a lot of factors to consider when calculating the price of gas.

“What changes is the price of oil. Those factors influence the price of gasoline, for example, terrorism or a war on terrorism, or issues in the Middle East have cropped up and, as a result, there is now more tension in the energy industry. Tension is risk and when you have risk, you charge more – there’s premiums,” says Bill Gwozd with Ziff Energy.

Gwozd says that consumers are helpless against the price of gas, but should focus on what they can control.

He says that taking alternative transportation like taking and bike or carpooling can help ease the pressure on your wallet.

Drivers should also consider tuning up their vehicles to make sure they are running as efficiently as possible.
