A 32-year-old Calgary firefighter was killed in a boating incident on the northwest end of Columbia Lake on the weekend.

Ryan Bjolverud was off duty and reportedly went fishing with a friend in a canoe on the lake on Sunday.

It is believed that the boat capsized but details of exactly what happened have not been released.

"Ryan was one of those exceptional people who loved serving the community in his job as a firefighter," said CFD Fire Chief Steve Dongworth. "He was a very proud and enthusiastic firefighter."

Bjolverud was in his third year of service with the Calgary Fire Department and his father Glenn is an assistant deputy chief.

"We have been in contact with Glenn and let him know that Ryan is in our thoughts and prayers today as is the whole family. We hope that as colleagues as well as friends and CFD family members, we will be able to support them in dealing with this tragic loss," said Dongworth.

A funeral service has not yet been announced and the family is asking for privacy at this time.
