Calgary will soon be home to the world's biggest skylight.

It is being installed at The Core shopping centre downtown and will span three city blocks.

"It's actually going to be the largest skylight of its kind in the world, so it's quite a coup for Calgary to get it. And I think it's going to be quite an amazing feature to the building," says Cindy Turnquist, a spokesperson for The Core.

The 26m x 200m structure will hang from a series of 95 arches and is being constructed by German engineers.

Each night, a team of 250 workers are installing 2,000 glass panels from Italy.

To make the space seem even more open, all the vertical support beams are being removed from the skylight. "We are installing tones of steel, new reinforcing steel, steel beams going through all the way through to be able to support the new skylight," says John Sargisson, the operations manager.

The record breaking skylight will be completed this summer.

Renovations on the rest of the mall won't be finished until the fall of 2010.
