The newest portion of the addition to the International Airport is on schedule to be completed later this year, officials say.

Garth Atkinson, with the Calgary Airport Authority, says the international terminal is the next step in the grand plan to revitalize the airport.

“We’re delighted, actually, how the entire airport development program, which is really a ten year, long term program, is coming together,” Atkinson told reporters on Friday.

“As you know, we opened the runway at the end of June. That was planned 40 years ago, designed 10 years ago, and took three years in construction, so that’s a great achievement.”

He says a lot of progress is being made on the new terminal, which will include a lot of new exciting elements that the public can take in on opening day.

About 1,600 workers have been at the site every single day during the construction of the terminal, which will approximately double the size of the existing facility.

They have also been working to install a 180,000 square foot wooden ceiling and 700 km of plastic tubing that will make up the terminals main heating a cooling system.

“We want to make this the most customer friendly facility in Canada,” Atkinson said.

The new terminal is scheduled to open this fall.
