Police in Ontario have arrested a 49-year-old Calgary man in connection with the abduction of his six children earlier this week.

On Monday, Calgary police received a report from a woman who believed her common-law partner had left the province with her six children.

The CPS Domestic Conflict Unit was called in to assist and conducted an investigation.

At the time, police did not believe the children were in any danger, so an Amber Alert was not activated.

"We knew what area he was in and we also knew that he'd been caring for the children for a long time," said Sergeant Darren Smith with the CPS.

At 4:50 p.m. on October 26, an officer with the Durham Regional Police Service pulled over a green SUV with Alberta plates.

Upon checking the licence plate of the vehicle, the officer found it was involved in a parental abduction investigation reported in Calgary.

The father was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant and is being held for a bail hearing.

The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 11 years old, are now in protective custody.

Sergeant Bill Calder with the Durham Regional Police said on Thursday that all the children are in good health.

"Police made sure the kids were safe and taken to a safe location before the male was arrested."

The suspect’s identity has not been released in order to protect the children involved.

Smith says he believes the man, who is not the biological father of any of the children, took the kids to Ontario because he has family there.

He faces six charges of child abduction under the age of 14.

Durham Police will now work with the CPS to bring the suspect and his children back to the city.

"The children are going to be brought back to Calgary as quickly as possible no matter what agency does it."
