Ramandeep Singh Jaswal, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death in a crash in the summer of 2012, was sentenced to three years in prison at a sentencing hearing Friday.

Police were called to the wreck on Bow Trail and Sarcee Trail SW on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at about 3:15 a.m.  Kelli-Jo Smith was a passenger in a truck that was heading northbound on Sarcee Trail.  She died after being ejected from the vehicle after it was hit by a 2009 Mercedes Benz which was travelling at a high rate of speed.  Smith’s husband was also seriously injured in the crash.

Jaswal’s lawyer, Balfour Der, confirmed he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and refusing a breath test.

Family and friends of Kelli-Jo Smith read victim impact statements in the case and the decision came down from the judge shortly after noon Friday.
