Now that Stephen Harper says he will be leaving politics and giving up his Calgary seat, speculation is ramping up as to who will run in a by-election, but one name can be scratched off that list.

On Wednesday, Stephen Harper decided that he would be stepping down before the fall sitting in the House of Commons, giving up his seat in Calgary-Heritage.

Political pundits are now looking to see who could run in the riding, with many suggesting that mayor Nenshi could give up his position to try a run.

But the Calgary mayor was quick to quash the rumours.

“It is very flattering that people say I could do a good job there but I have said many times that I have the best political job in Canada and I’ve still got 18 months to go in a mandate, so we’re going to make that the best of the 18 months as we can.”

Nenshi says he’s been courted by every political party, federally and provincially, but he still won’t bite.

As for Harper’s future, sources say he’ll likely form a global consulting firm, focusing on foreign affairs, but he is also considering spots on several corporate boards.

There are no details on when Harper will actually step down, but the Prime Minister will have six months from whenever he does to officially call a by-election.
