Rick Hanson, Calgary’s police chief, met with several members of the city’s Somali community on Sunday night to discuss the latest violence facing their community.

About 100 people attended the meeting that took place at a mosque in the southeast.

During the three hour meeting, they discussed the recent shooting that left two young men dead as well as how the community can build a better relationship with police and aid vulnerable youth.

Police have one suspect in custody in connection with a New Year’s Day shooting that killed 26-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed. The man hasn’t been formally charged yet because of a lack of evidence. He is being held on unrelated charge.

No arrested have been made in the death of 23-year-old Murad Omar, who was shot to death in a Rosedale alley a day later.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call police.
