Calgary police have identified the man who was killed in an early morning shooting in the northwest community of Panorama Hills.

Shots rang out in the 200 block of Panamount Way N.W. just after midnight and when police arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds in the front seat of a white Dodge Charger.

The male victim was pronounced dead by EMS and has been identified as 27-year-old Louie Angelo Mojica.

Inspector Don Coleman with the CPS Major Crimes Unit says Mojica was known to police.

"I wouldn't speak to any specifics regarding his background. He was known to police. We are exploring any current or historical connections to any criminal networks or anything like that," Coleman said.

He says that Mojica planned to meet at the location in Panorama Hills and was targeted by his attackers.

Coleman says there is no clear connection between Friday morning's shooting and any other incident that occurred nearby, but authorities are not ruling anything out.

He says police are looking for suspects and that witnesses reported seeing a dark-coloured mini-van and dark-coloured Mazda 3 flee the area.

One resident said he was woken up by the gunshots. "I heard the gunshots ring out at just about midnight. Other than that, it's a little scary to wake up to. It's getting a little bad in town I guess," said Andrew, who only wanted to be identified by his first name.

He said that he heard seven to nine shots. "He definitely unloaded. It was eerily quiet afterwards. That was probably one of the more creepy parts."

Andrew says the incident is concerning given the number of familes in the area, "Usually a pretty quiet street. Kids running up and down. It's not something you'd expect at all. That's something you never want to see when there are families about."

Sandy Sarvia, who lives nearby, says she is keeping her children close. "I have kids and we're always walking in the community. We just got to be more aware of our surroundings. I got my son sleeping with me now, just to make sure."

Sarvia says she came over to see the scene because of what's transpired in the area lately. "You can't help but come and check it out because it's your community. It's two minutes away, not even. As a person that lives in this community, of course I'm concerned."

Coleman says that public tips will help investigators track down those responsible.

"We're looking for anyone who may have been involved. We believe there's probably multiple people involved potentially but we are still exploring that. We are asking that anyone that has any information, witnessed this or may have been involved comes forward. In incidents like this you often see someone comes forward and speaks to police. I'd encourage that to be sooner than later," he said. "It's a big concern as it always is anytime there is acts of violence like this that puts the public in danger. What we'd like to see is zero tolerance from a community standpoint from anybody that knows anything comes forward with this. The only thing that stops this sort of activity is people in jail."
