Almost one in two Calgarians disapprove of the performance of the Calgary Police, says a new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll released on Wednesday.

The poll, which was formed from data collected on September 7, found that 48 percent of respondents disapproved of the police’s performance.

“Calgarians have a negative view about the Calgary Police Service with 39 percent approval compared to 48 percent disapproval,“ said Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research, in a release. “These numbers may concern some but there is a silver lining: strong approval is at 22 percent compared to strong disapproval at just 11 percent, this may better reveal the public mood - a lot of people are in the middle. In addition, almost 4 in 10 people said their opinion about CPS had improved in the past year compared to just 25 percent who said it had diminished.”

It also found that residents have confidence in the CPS’ accountability, with 51 percent of respondents saying that officers involved in misconduct allegations are held accountable for their actions.

But residents also say that police officers need better training to handle high stress situations (49 percent).

As for the issue of body-worn cameras for police officers, 61 percent of respondents say they strongly approve of officers needing to wear the devices.
