The City of Calgary’s latest census reports Calgary’s population increased from April 2015 to April 2016.

According to the 2016 census data, Calgary’s population expanded to 1,235,171 by the spring of 2015, an increase of 4,256 people over the numbers from the previous year.

The increase is attributed to the fact Calgary experienced 10,783 more births than deaths during the 12 month period, not relocation.

The 2015 census identified the following communities as the fastest growing:

  • Mahogany (increase of 2,040 residents)
  • Nolan Hill (increase of 2,033 residents)
  • Evanston (increase of 1,381 residents)
  • Auburn Bay (increase of 1,368 residents)
  • Skyview Ranch (increase of 1,245 residents)
  • Copperfield (increase of 1,137 residents)
  • Legacy (increase of 1,056 residents)

“Understanding where people live, how they’re moving through the city and what neighbourhoods they’re choosing helps us make very big decisions, multi-billion dollar decisions around how we’re planning and how we’re investing in the city,” said Mayor Nenshi during the announcement of the 2016 Civic Census results.

According to the City of Calgary, the number of dwellings recorded as vacant was 20,843, more than 8,000 more than recorded during the 2015 census.
