The beaver has been Canada’s top animal for the past 22 years but a new vote, organized by officials at the Calgary Zoo could dethrone the industrious icon.

For Canada’s 150th birthday, zoo officials are reopening the debate about what animal should be named as the country’s national animal.

The zoo says it is trying to engage all Canadians in the discussion.

“It’s a fun campaign that we hope will both kick start a celebration of the wonderful Canadian species that are so important to our national identity and to raise awareness of the serious challenges they face in the wild,” said Lindsey Galloway, senior director and Calgary Zoo spokesperson.

Seven candidates have been nominated for the honour:

  • grizzly bear
  • whooping crane
  • bison
  • mountain goat
  • grey wolf
  • grey owl
  • beaver

Starting on Thursday, people from all over the country can vote for their favourite animal by going to the campaign website.
