Airdrie RCMP has now laid charges in connection with a homemade explosive device that was found inside a rental home in the community north of Calgary.

On October 2, police were called to the southwest section of the City of Airdrie for reports that an explosive device had been found.

Officials say that the caller had cleaned out a rental home at another location and brought the contents to their home, finding a suspicious looking ammunition box among the items.

Police inspected the device and, with the help of the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit, identified it as a homemade explosive device.

"It's a green almost Canadian Forces-style ammunition box. It's very recognizable as an ammunition box. There wasn't any writing or anything of note on it," said Cst. Jason Curtis with the Airdrie RCMP.

Residents of nearby homes were told to leave the area while crews from ATCO disconnected gas lines to the affected area.

Teams from Edmonton were able to attend the scene and safely dispose of the bomb.

Police have charged Kristopher Goyman, 24, of Airdrie, with making an explosive device with intent to endanger life or cause serious property damage.

He is expected to appear in Airdrie Provincial Court on October 22.
