Officials say they have now laid charges against a person who was caught accessing the private medical information of patients at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

One employee, who has not been identified, now faces 26 charges in connection with the offences, which took place over a 14-month period.

The breaches were discovered through a computer audit and 240 patients were informed that their private health records had been accessed.

The incident was referred to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and an investigation was launched.

The matter was then turned over to the Crown prosecutor and charges were laid under the Health Information Act.

This is the sixth time that charges have been laid.

The maximum penalty for each offence is $50,000.
