Police have arrested a man in connection with the hit and run death of a woman in a northwest intersection and are still looking for another vehicle they believe was involved in the fatal collision.
On Wednesday, a woman in her 50s was crossing in the crosswalk on Sandstone Dr. and Berkshire Blvd. N.W. at about 6:55 a.m. when she was hit by at least two vehicles.
The woman died at the scene and police are in the process of notifying her family.
An area resident, who was with the woman when she died, says she was struggling to breathe. "I held her hand and told her to hold on and she took her last breath and that was it."
She went on to say that she was surprised at the lack of compassion by passersby. "Everyone just kept driving and no one stopped. It was horrible."
About an hour later, police received a call from a man who said he may have been involved in the collision.
Police seized his vehicle, a red Ford Taurus station wagon, and say he has been arrested and charges are pending.
Sergeant Colin Foster with the Traffic Unit says that they are still looking for the second vehicle. "One person has handed himself in to police, however, we do have one vehicle that remains outstanding."
The vehicle they are interested in is a dark-coloured sedan with damage to the lower part of the front bumper.
