Some of Calgary’s finest chefs are collaborating to put together and serve a full course meal to guests at the Mustard Seed on Monday night.

ATB, Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance, AMA Travel and Travel Alberta have partnered to put on the third annual ‘a seat at our table’ initiative.

“With the idea of focusing in on stories on Alberta food, the farmers, the producers, the chefs that prepare the food as well as the communities that support it,” said Fraser Abbott, Chairperson of Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance. “We brought together top chefs from across the province and they’re creating an amazing collaborative dinner down at the Mustard Seed tonight so that the conversation can shift towards creating healthy, affordable and safe food communities for Albertans of all walks of life.”

The chefs will prepare a gourmet meal for the Seed’s clients and also teach them about some of the locally grown products in the province.

“It’s about conversation and getting the chefs together. There’s a big community in this city of chefs that love to collaborate together and do other events so this was a great opportunity for us to get together and share that message about local, sustainable. We’ve got some great farmers in this province and it’s an opportunity for us to showcase that and then give them a really good, wholesome, hearty meal using local, organic and farm raised products,” said Jan Hansen, Executive Chef for the Hotel Arts Group.

Hansen says giving back is particularly important right now as many people are turning to community programs and services to make ends meet.

“In this downturn in the economy we have right now there’s more people that are using these types of facilities for their meals and their sustenance. It’s a great opportunity for us here at Hotel Arts too, and a big passion of mine, to be able to give back to the community and do something great for them and have them enjoy a really good meal that’s done by some pretty talented chefs in this city and again using products that we all understand and know and love and use on a regular basis here from our province.”

The Charity Longtable at the Mustard Seed will feed about 400 guests on Monday night.
