Turney Valley RCMP have charged a man after restricted weapons and drugs were found in his car after they were called to investigate suspicious vehicle.

In the early morning hours on December 23, officers were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle parked at the pumps of a gas station, despite the business being closed at the time.

When officers arrived at the scene, they spotted the driver and several rounds of ammunition easily within his reach.

The driver was unable to produce proper identification, so he was subsequently arrested.

Police conducted a further search of the vehicle, where they found:

  • A loaded 9mm handgun
  • 140 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine

Officers also obtained a search warrant for the vehicle, which uncovered:

  • Several knives
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Approximately $1,000 in Canadian currency

Ivan Leto, 26, of Chestermere, has been charged with:

  • Possession of a loaded restricted firearm in a vehicle
  • Possession of a restricted firearm without a licence
  • Possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of proceeds of crime
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

Leto was released on a recognizance and is expected to appear in Turner Valley Provincial Court on February 10, 2015.
