Residents of the historic Chinatown area of Calgary are fighting against a proposal for a 30 story development they say will damage the character of the area.

“What we don’t want is encroachments that would affect the businesses, affect the residences, affect the ambiance of the unique character, the cultural enclave that Chinatown is,” said Terry Wong, Chinatown Business Revitalization Zone.

The development is slated for construction on Second Avenue S.W. and will require rezoning to allow buildings higher than 15 stories.

About 50 people marched to city hall on Monday, February 8, 2016 to protest the plan, saying the developer did not adequately consult with the community. City council has put off any decision about the project for two months so the developer can complete consultation.

Those who oppose the building say it will create too much shade, and will alter Chinatown’s unique appearance.
