Officials at the Calgary Stampede say that a chuckwagon driver was seriously hurt and a horse died in separate incidents during training runs held on Tuesday morning.
Driver Tim Haroldson was injured while riding as a passenger on a wagon driven by Jerry Bremner.
The wagon rolled as it came around one of the barrels during a morning training run and Haroldson was thrown from the rig.
Haroldson was taken to hospital shortly after the incident. A driver that spoke with CTV says Haroldon, who is from Saskatchewan, has been put into an induced coma due to his injuries.
The investigation is still in its early stages, but reports show that there was nothing out of the ordinary with regards to the wagon, horses, or tack.
In a separate incident, 12-year-old Denny, a horse that was part of Reg Johnstone’s team, collapsed and died after completing one of the training runs.
The horse, which had been a part of Johnstone’s team for about five years, recently raced at the Ponoka Stampede about a week ago.
Officials say an autopsy will be conducted on the animal to determine cause of death.
