Another flood season is coming closer in the City of Calgary and officials aren’t taking any chances when it comes to flood protection.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi told the media that there is a long list of items crews are working on to prepare.

Among them are:

  • A public warning system at fire halls
  • Gravel bar shaping along the river
  • Upgrades to storm drainage
  • Upgrades to sanitary lift stations
  • Upgrades to the sewage treatment plant
  • Improving river bank erosion sites

Nenshi says that work is already underway. “Repairs are underway this spring right now at more than 30 sites across the river bank. This means building up these erosion sites to levels that were higher than existed before the flood last year.”

There is also a greater responsibility for residents living in flood fringes areas to pay attention to rising water levels and the weather forecast between May 15 and July 15.

The city has a website available for those looking for more information on flood recovery.
