The rain has stopped, but the problems caused by this week's heavy downpour remain for many residents in southern Alberta.

In Coaldale, homeowners are frustrated. Water retention sites in that community are overflowing, flooding yards and basements.

Garages along Parkside Point in Coaldale are filled with personal belongings. Water behind those homes began rising early Saturday morning, eventually filling yards and then basements.

Darcy Morrison's basement is ruined. The water level sits even with the basement window. Sandbags and spray foam are doing their best to keep any extra water out.

"I just can't believe my beautiful home is underwater," said Morrison.

Morrison says they were told the pool of water behind their home was a manmade lake, not a water retention site.

"It's impossible to put into words, I mean, you come here, you buy this house three years ago, pay big bucks for a house backing onto a lake and here we are," added Morrison.

Next door, Beverly McCool is counting her blessings. The grade of her yard kept water from causing too much damage. The contents of her basement, now line her living room.

"It's just hard seeing everybody going through this," said McCool.

Town officials say they've been told the infrastructure for the St. Mary Irrigation District simply can't handle all the water. For now, they've been asked to keep it down and do the best they can. They've been pumping there since Friday.

But that comes as little consolation to those living in that area. Morrison estimates damages to be in the thousands. She says she's called town officials to make them aware of the problem, but so far they haven't received a call back.

"We're exhausted, the basement's done," said Morrison.

For now, all residents can do is wait for the water to recede, and start the long process of cleaning up.
