A layer of snow covered the roads in the city on Tuesday making the morning drive a little tricky for transit drivers and commuters.

Streets were wet from the recent warm weather and that combined with the snow overnight created icy conditions on roads surfaces, especially side streets.

Calgary police responded to 112 crashes between 5:00 and 10:00 a.m. and say eight of those involved injuries.

A Calgary transit driver ran into a few troubles on a hill on Coach Hill Rd. S.W. at about 8:00 a.m.

The bus was unable to get traction on the ice and transit and police were called in to control traffic.

Stoney Trail was also quite slippery in sections and motorists were reporting low visibility in some areas.

The city says it was aware of the conditions and crews were out early putting down salt on priority routes.

“We did anticipate the snow as per the forecast overnight into this morning so we were out there salting the priority one routes, so those are the major thoroughfares as well as the connector routes that connect people from their communities to the major thoroughfares,” said  Carissa Vescio, Transportation spokesperson. “We’re also focusing, right now, on known trouble spots. Spots like icy bridge decks and on and off ramps.”

March is typically the snowiest month in southern Alberta.

“It is generally the heaviest snowfall of the year. But I think we’re almost there, we only have a few weeks left of March so I think, just remind people that it’s still winter driving conditions and just slow down and stay safe and fill up your window washer fluid, I would recommend that,” said Vescio.

CTV Calgary Meteorologist, David Spence, says it will be warm on Wednesday but winter will return closer to the weekend with a chance of flurries for Thursday and Friday.
