The riding of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner will continue to be Tory blue as Conservative Glen Motz won by a landslide in a byelection on Monday.

Motz, a former Medicine Hat police officer, won with 70 percent of the popular vote.

The Liberals’ Stan Sakamoto, despite having the star power of Justin Trudeau on his side, came out with just over 25 percent.

The byelection was called to replace Jim Hillyer, who died of a heart attack in March.

Motz did acknowledge Hillyer in his acceptance speech on Monday night.

“I do want to take a minute before I do my ‘thank yous’ to acknowledge Jim Hillyer and his family. He was a committed person to our riding in southern Alberta. I know this is taking a toll on his family and I wanted to honour him.”

He then thanked voters, his wife and family and his campaign team.

The voter turnout for the byelection was about 40 percent.
