The man accused of stabbing his mother and stepfather told police he did it, just after hours after the murder.

Derek Puffer is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of the veteran Calgary sportscaster Bill Powers and his wife Donna Lee in July 2013.  On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The video of the three hour police interview was played in court Monday and Tuesday.

In the video Derek Puffer tells police he doesn’t know what came over him.  He said he was haunted by voices in his head which gave him explicit instructions to kill his mother and stepfather.

He said “I can’t – like I just went in there after getting instructions and I just stabbed them.  And I can remember them going no and I don’t know why I didn’t stop, I was like in a trance.”

Puffer also told the officer interviewing him that he was plagued by insomnia for days leading up to the murders.  He said he heard constant chanting, music and three voice in his head for days on end.

He told the officer he was a schizophrenia patient, but wasn’t taking his medication.  Puffer also worried whether his sisters would forgive him.

40-year-old Puffer faces two counts of second-degree murder.  He is expected to testify Wednesday.

The focus of the judge-alone hearing is whether Puffer was criminally responsible at the time of the homicides.
