Lawyers for the man accused of killing Sara Baillie and her daughter Taliyah Marsman have some more time to prepare for their client's court appearance.

Edward Delton Downey, 46, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder after investigators located the bodies of Sara Baillie and Baillie’s daughter Taliyah Marsman earlier this summer.

Baillie’s body was discovered in her Panorama Hills home while Taliyah’s remains were found in a rural area east of Calgary in mid-July.

At the last court hearing in the case two weeks ago, Downey’s lawyers were still waiting for the rest of the details from the Crown.

On Wednesday, the defence says they still haven't received all the evidence in the case, so the court adjourned the matter for another two weeks.

Downey did not appear in person or via CCTV during his first hearing or Wednesday’s proceedings. His lawyers, Hersh and Gavin Wolch, say that their client doesn’t need to be there for such a short hearing.

The case gained national attention in July when Baillie, 34, was found dead in her home and her daughter was missing, prompting an AMBER Alert to be called.

That alert ended once Taliyah’s body was found a few days later in a rural area near Chestermere.

Downey was formally charged a day later while in police custody following his arrest at a strip mall in the 3300 block of 32 Avenue N.E.

Police say that the accused knew both of the victims prior to the killings and has an extensive criminal history including abetting prostitution, cocaine trafficking and weapons offences dating back to the 1980s.

They also confirmed that he had ties to the East Coast gang; North Preston's Finest, a group often associated with the sex industry.

Downey’s counsel has previously voiced concern about the amount of information that’s been released to the public about the case and says that their client won’t get a fair trial because of it.

Gavin Wolch says he wants his client to be tried in a court room, not in the court of public opinion or in the media.

The next hearing will take place on September 7.
