Fire crews from a number of jurisdictions tackled a large grassfire northeast of Blackie on Tuesday that prompted the MD of Foothills to declare a Local State of Emergency.

The blaze started on Tuesday afternoon and smoke from the fire could be seen for kilometres.

Alberta Emergency Alert sent out a warning that the fire was spotted near the area of 482 Avenue and 304 Street East and that it was moving quickly in a north-easterly direction.

The smoke reduced the visibility on area roads and the MD of Foothills No. 31 declared a State of Local Emergency at 5:45 p.m.

People in the area were told to take shelter and close doors, windows and vents to reduce the risk of smoke inhalation.

Fire crews from Blackie, Cayley, Heritage Pointe, Longview, Okotoks, High River, Claresholm and Vulcan county were able to get control of the blaze at about 7:30 p.m.

The fire was knocked down around 8:30 p.m. and officials say crews will stay to monitor the situation and put out any hot spots.

No homes, building or animals were affected by the fire.

One firefighter was injured while fighting the blaze and received treatment at the High River Hospital and is reported to be in good condition.
