A man and his dog were able to get out of their burning home on Wednesday afternoon thanks to the quick actions of a neighbour.

Fire crews were called to a home on Chapalina Grove SE at about 2:25 p.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from the back of the home when they arrived.

“The gentleman who was in the house and the dog made it out safely but he was sleeping at the time and was woken up by the neighbour so thankfully that neighbour was very astute, did all the right things, called 911, and got this gentleman out of the house,” said Carol Henke, CFD Public Information Officer.

Crews worked quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes but one house did sustain some damage to the siding.

“They limited the damage to the existing house where the fire started,” said Henke.

Henke says crews were changed out regularly during the incident because of the warm weather.

The fire is under investigation and initial reports indicate that it started outside, at the back of the home.
