Members of the Didsbury RCMP are investigating an early morning collision in the town of Carstairs which has a 26-year-old man fighting for his life in hospital.

According to RCMP, four people were walking southbound in the northbound lane of 10 Ave., shortly before 2:30 a.m. It is believed the group had been taking part in the town’s annual Beef & Barley Days festivities.

Three of the four left the road when an oncoming car approached. The driver of the car, a 30-year-old woman from Carstairs, attempted to avoid a collision by swerving but her last second effort proved unsuccessful. The impact of the crash sent the man flying through the air before landing in a ditch several metres away.

The man suffered severe head trauma. STARS Air Ambulance attended the scene and transported the man to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary in potentially life threatening condition. RCMP have not released the man's identity but have confirmed he is a resident of Crossfield.

At the time of the crash, visibility was poor and the pedestrian was not wearing reflective clothing. According to witnesses, the man was intoxicated.

RCMP members do not believe speed was a factor in the collision and the driver of the car had not been drinking.

An investigation into the crash is underway but RCMP members do not expect to charge the driver in connection to the incident.
