A cyclist has been sent to hospital after he was hit by a cargo van in downtown Calgary on Friday morning.

At about 7:15 a.m., a 28-year-old man in a van was driving northbound on 8 St. S.W. when he struck a 29-year-old man riding a bicycle riding eastbound on 10 Ave,

Police closed down a section of 10 Ave. at 8 St. S.W. for the investigation.

Witnesses who work with the cyclist said that the victim ran a red light into the path of the cargo van.

Sgt. Jorge Gottschling says the cyclist may have been coasting and trying to time the light to go through as soon as the light turned green.

The van was slowing for a red light when the traffic light suddenly turned green again.

Police say the cyclist was not wearing a helmet and they suspect he received a serious injury to his head in the crash.

"He is conscious in the hospital, but it looks as though he may have a brain injury," Gottschling said.

Police say in a release that the cyclist's condition has stabilized and he is now recovering in hospital.

The roads were reopened at about 10:45 a.m. on Friday.

The CPS Traffic Section continues to investigate and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call 403-567-4000, or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:
