A preliminary hearing will be held on August 14-17, 2017 for Edward Downey who is accused of killing Sara Baillie and her daughter Taliyah Marsman.

Downey's lawyer entered pleas of not guilty in court on Thursday.

Ballie, 34, was found dead in her northwest Calgary home on July 11, 2016 and an Amber Alert was issued for her daughter Taliyah, 5. Three days later the child’s body was found on a rural property east of the city. Police believe both were killed within hours of each other.

Downey faces two counts of first-degree murder and remains in custody. Police believe he was an acquaintance of the victims.

Downey’s co-council Gavin Wolch had said he expects the inquiry will be 10 days long.
